Charlie : Tell us a bit about your background
Evelyn : My name is Natalia Evelyn Bencicova. I’m from Bratislava ( Slovakia ), currently living in Berlin.
C : How did you get into photography?
E : I gained some experience by working in modeling, but I have always felt that I wanted to create something. I started with photography 2 years ago, which is not a long time, but I don’t believe in time – I believe in intensity.
C : What is your favorite thing to photograph? Why?
E : I take the pictures of people, but they are not real. Usually they just represent something, someone, anyone. But still, my photos are not about them. It is not about who is on the picture but what is on the picture, what is happening, what is present. The picture is already in my head and I’m just trying to transform the vision into reality with a little help from accidents and improvisation. To take the picture is for me only the last step, the easiest one. My work is to create the whole illusion, which eventually becomes real for a moment. That’s the magic.
C : What are some things that inspire your work?
E : Everything. Mostly I have a felling that i don’t need to search for inspiration because it just come to me naturally and usually when I least expect it. I’m inspired by life, dreams and everything in between.
C : Describe your creative process – how do you come up with an idea for a new piece ?
E : Most of the time I’m so absorbed by the idea that the whole process becomes an essential part of my living, or even surviving:) It is something that drags me forward so intensely, that it becomes the most important of my basic needs. When I have an idea in which I believe, I cannot really sleep or do anything else until I bring it to life. It is the feeling of great fascination and importance, which is almost outreaching me. The energy to wake up and work as hard as possible without even realizing it. Without this feeling I just don’t feel fulfilled.
C : Can you tell us about a project that you worked on recently that you’re particularly proud / fond of ?
It would be a lot of words so i always prefer when my photos speak instead of me My last project ECCE HOMO was also my biggest one. It was a lot of work to find the location, people willing to participate and to create the whole mood and composition usually in the short amount of time with help of my assistants and friends (especially Adam and Bea). The conditions for the photo-shoot are always complicated and it requires a lot of improvisation.
E : We are basically trying to create SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING with a lot of limitations and unexpected difficulties, which you have to solve or just ignore :). But particularly during this project I realised that nothing would be possible without other people, mostly the models, who believed in me. It might seem that they really suffered and I believe they also did but they decided to be the part of the project, because they felt, that they are part of something important and fascinating and even more strong than temporary physical pain.
It is not my project, it is our project and I hope they all know it!
C : Where do you see yourself in a year? in five years?
E : I just want to live and to create. I want to do it without any limitations if possible. I hope I will never loose my passion or at least always find a new one. I wish for life full of intensity, whatever it will be.
